Two Glenwood projects are receiving a major financial boost thanks to grants from the Wellmark Foundation.

The foundation announced more than $370,000 in grant awards for 17 projects throughout Iowa, including two within Glenwood. Glenwood's Trail and Trailhead project and the Vine Street Pickleball Court project will each receive $25,000.

The trail project's goal is to connect Glenwood to Bellevue and Council Bluffs and will feature 2.5 miles of paved trails, along with six bridges. The trailhead portion of the project will include a parking area for residents to engage in school and park activities.

The pickleball court project is a joint venture between the city of Glenwood and the Southwest Iowa Pickleball Committee. The two entities are working to create six pickleball courts to replace the city's dilapidated 50-year-old tennis courts. The new courts would be the first outdoor pickleball courts in Southwest Iowa.

Projects are required to match up to 50 percent of the grant in order to qualify. Since 2011, the Wellmark Foundation has provided more than $9 million in grant funding to communities in Iowa and South Dakota. Also of note: the city of Lamoni was awarded a $25,000 grant for a 900-foot trail extension across the dam and spillway of Home Pond.
