New restaurant/bar planned for Uptown Ankeny

Uptown Ankeny will soon be the home of Pig ‘n Pedal, a restaurant, bar and outdoor patio that will be housed in a former gasoline station at 710 S.W. Third St.

The restaurant, which managing partners Jason Kapela and Justin Sykes hope to open by Aug. 1, is adjacent to Firetrucker Brewery and just south of the popular High Trestle Trail trailhead and market pavilion.

“This whole area is taking off,” said Kapela, a former co-owner of Louie's Wine Dive in Des Moines.

Pig ‘n Pedal this week received the necessary approvals from the city of Ankeny to add a 2,400-square-foot outdoor patio with fireside lounges. The patio, with an outdoor bar, will seat up to 80 people, documents filed with the city show. It will also include an area where bicyclists can park their bikes.

The building formerly housed a gas station and before that, a heating and cooling business.
Kapela, who is a chef, and Sykes began talking about the project more than a year ago, Kapela said. The menu will includes foods made with local products. In addition, butchering will be done on-site, material provided the city shows.

Kapela said demolition work inside the building is nearly complete, and now, with the necessary city approvals, construction will soon begin.
